Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme

About Us :-

There is an estimated incidence of 28 lakh cases in a year in India and 4.8 lakhs TB deaths are occurring in a year in India. However, near 17 lakhs patients are reported to National Program (RNTCP), remaining 10 lakh patients are usually referred as “Missing Millions TB Patient’s”. These patients are either hidden cases in the community, which are still undiagnosed or may be taking treatment from the private sector.
In Himachal Pradesh, for past 5-6 years, about 14 thousand TB patients are diagnosed and put on treatment in each year in Himachal Pradesh in Government Health Institutions. In 2017, against the target of 14070, State diagnosed and put near 15000 new TB patients in the Government Health institutions. Against the target of 2500, near 900 new TB patients were notified from the private sector in Himachal Pradesh. These is a gap in notification from private sector in Himachal Pradesh. Near 550 TB deaths are reported each year in Himachal Pradesh.
In Himachal Pradesh, there are near 450 Drug Resistant TB cases of treatment as on today; out of which near 300 diagnosed and put on treatment in the year 2018.
Program roll out in Himachal Pradesh: Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme has been implemented in Himachal Pradesh in a phased manner. Hamirpur was one of the first pilot districts in India to take up the activity in 1995, followed by Kangra and Mandi in 1998. Entire state has been covered in January 2002

Goal and Objectives of RNTCP -:

The goal of RNTCP is to decrease the mortality and morbidity due to tuberculosis and cut down the chain of transmission of infection until TB ceases to be a public health problem. The goal is achieved through the following objectives:

RNTCP National Strategic Plan (NSP) is with a vision of TB free India by 2025.

The objectives of NSP are -:

  • To achieve 90% notification rate for all cases.
  • To achieve 90% success rate for all new & 85% amongst retreatment TB cases registered under RNTCP.
  • To significantly improve the successful outcome of treatment of Drug Resistant-TB cases.
  • To achieve decreased mortality and morbidity of HIV associated TB.
  • To improve the outcome of TB care in private sector
